Counting the places in Matsuyama with the most accidents, from public data (2019-2025)
From National Police Agency public data, this page lists the top 12 grid squares of 1 km on a side in Matsuyama by number of accidents, together with road and traffic light names from map data. These are not counts for each intersection.
Summary
- Of the Ehime Prefecture accidents counted from National Police Agency public data, 7,363 were in Matsuyama over the 7 years from 2019 to 2025.
- The top 12 grid squares of 0.01 degrees (about 1 km on a side) are all in Matsuyama, with 2,432 accidents in total (calculated).
- The top square has 321 accidents. In the map data, the Kawaramachi and Okaido Koban-mae intersection traffic lights are in this area.
- We counted accidents in each square's area. These are not counts for each intersection or road in it.
- The places on the map are in order of count, not driving order. The Ehime Prefectural Police say they are stepping up enforcement of intersection violations.
This article is based on official sources and maps. A record of the operator actually driving this route will be added after the drive.
A driving video is in preparation. When it is published, it will appear here with chapters numbered the same as the points below.

Matsuyama had 7,363 accidents in 7 years. Here are 12 squares of 1 km on a side
In Counting Ehime’s traffic accidents from public data, we counted 15,873 accidents in Ehime Prefecture from 2019 to 2025, using the National Police Agency’s traffic accident statistics open data (main table). In the same count, the rows with Matsuyama’s municipality code add up to 7,363 over the 7 years. That is 46.4% of the prefecture total (calculated; the summary data we publish has the city and town breakdown for 2025 only).
This page takes the “0.01-degree grid squares” made in that count and lists the 12 squares in Matsuyama with the most accidents, in order of count. A square is about 1.1 km in latitude and about 0.9 km in longitude at this latitude. The count is the total of the accidents inside the square. From map data (OpenStreetMap), we added the names of roads that pass through or along the edge of each square, and the names given to traffic lights.
- The counts are the values in /data/ehime-accidents.json, which we used for the count. We did not count again.
- The total of the top 12, and the shares of the prefecture and the city, are calculated for this page.
- Squares ranked 13th and below are not listed.
- From this data, we cannot tell whether an accident happened on those roads or at the intersections with those traffic lights. The names from the map data only show what is in the area of the square.
The top 12 squares, in order of count
| Rank | Center of square (north latitude, east longitude) | Accidents (total for 2019-2025) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 33.835, 132.775 | 321 |
| 2nd | 33.835, 132.755 | 226 |
| 3rd | 33.845, 132.755 | 214 |
| 4th | 33.825, 132.775 | 209 |
| 5th | 33.825, 132.785 | 202 |
| 6th | 33.855, 132.755 | 200 |
| 7th | 33.845, 132.775 | 198 |
| 8th | 33.825, 132.755 | 185 |
| 9th | 33.835, 132.765 | 183 |
| 10th | 33.835, 132.785 | 169 |
| 11th | 33.815, 132.795 | 165 |
| 12th | 33.825, 132.745 | 160 |
The top 12 add up to 2,432 accidents. That is 15.3% of Ehime Prefecture’s 15,873 and 33.0% of Matsuyama’s 7,363 (both calculated). For all 12 squares, the municipality code of every row in the square was Matsuyama.
Each square extends 0.005 degrees north and south and 0.005 degrees east and west of its center. For example, the 1st square is from 33.830 to 33.840 degrees north latitude and from 132.770 to 132.780 degrees east longitude.
Road and traffic light names in each square’s area
For roads from the map data, we list the main roads that pass through the square or along its edge (some city roads are left out). Road numbers are the numbers written in the map data. “Names given to traffic lights” are only the traffic light points that have a name in the map data. The “points” on this page are, in each square, the named traffic light closest to the center of the square (not counting those named after a pedestrian bridge). The 10th and 11th squares have no named traffic lights, so their points are the centers of the squares. The points are in order of count, not driving order. “Start” only means the square ranked 1st by count, and “goal” only means the one ranked 12th. This is not a route that goes through them in order.
What the Ehime Prefectural Police say
What we can read from the numbers goes only as far as which areas have a high count. The reasons, and which intersections have more, cannot be told from this data. The Ehime Prefectural Police have published the following about intersections. This is one sentence from a Prefectural Police flyer (no issue date is written on it; it was on the Prefectural Police website on October 13, 2026).
◆ 県警では、交通事故の約半数が交差点で発生している実態を踏まえ、交差点違反(交差点優先車妨害、信号無視、一時不停止等)の取締りを強化しています。
Translation: “◆ Based on the fact that about half of traffic accidents happen at intersections, the Prefectural Police are stepping up enforcement of intersection violations (obstructing a vehicle with priority at an intersection, ignoring traffic lights, failing to stop at a stop sign, and so on).”

We read the original text of this flyer, and of the Prefectural Police’s advice on right turns and crosswalks, in What the Ehime Prefectural Police ask drivers to watch for on Ehime roads.
The Ehime Prefectural Police also publish a “Traffic Accident Map” (交通事故マップ) where you can see on a map where accidents happened.
身近で発生している交通事故・・・いつ、どこで、どのような事故が 発生しているのか是非一度確認し、交通事故防止に役立ててください。
Translation: “Traffic accidents that happen close to you… Please check once when and where, and what kind of accidents are happening, and use it to help prevent traffic accidents.”

How we counted, and what we cannot tell
- We converted the latitude and longitude, given in degrees, minutes, and seconds of the world geodetic system in the National Police Agency’s code table, to decimal degrees, and divided them into 0.01-degree squares. The steps are described in more detail in the article for all of Ehime Prefecture.
- We have not checked for small differences (a difference in geodetic systems) between the latitude and longitude in the accident data and the positions in the map data.
- This data does not include the traffic volume, road length, number of traffic lights, or road structure of each area. From this data, we cannot tell what causes a high count.
- The squares are divided by evenly spaced lines of latitude and longitude. They do not line up with the borders of intersections or road sections.
- The National Police Agency writes that the data at the time of publication may change with later corrections, and that it does not fix the published data when that happens, so it may differ from the statistical tables it publishes separately.
