You can drive only as far as the parking lot

You cannot drive up to the castle keep at Matsuyama Castle (松山城). Matsuyama City, the Matsuyama Castle official site, and Ehime Prefecture’s official tourism site all say the same thing.

After you park, you climb by ropeway or lift, or walk up a castle approach path.

After you get off the ropeway or lift, it takes about 10 minutes on foot from Chojaganaru (長者ヶ平) to near the castle keep.”

If you walk up, Matsuyama City’s page “松山城よくある質問” (Matsuyama Castle FAQ) gives the time as “about 20 to 30 minutes”. The same page says the Shinonomeguchi approach path (東雲口登城道) and the Kenchoura approach path (県庁裏登城道) are the ones most often used.

We could not find an official page with the driving time from the airport to the castle

We could not find an official page that says how many minutes it takes by car from Matsuyama Airport to Matsuyama Castle (or to Okaido (大街道)). What we found were times from expressway interchanges and times by bus.

What it says Which page
Matsuyama IC → National Route 33, by car about 20 minutes → Matsuyama Castle Parking Lot The access map on Access and Parking (Matsuyama Castle official site)
About 20 minutes by car from Matsuyama IC Matsuyama Castle (Iyokan Net)
Matsuyama IC 20 minutes, Kawauchi IC 30 minutes, Imabari IC 60 minutes (to the Matsuyama Castle Ropeway Shinonomeguchi station building) About Matsuyama City and Access (Matsuyama Convention & Visitors Bureau)
By limousine bus, about 30 minutes ride, get off at “Okaido”, about 5 minutes on foot (from Matsuyama Airport) Matsuyama Castle FAQ (Matsuyama City)

The “about 20 minutes”, “20 minutes”, “30 minutes”, and “60 minutes” above are times from the interchanges. They are not times from Matsuyama Airport.

The table on the Matsuyama Airport official site page “空港までのアクセス” (Access to the airport) also had no row for Matsuyama Castle or Okaido.

The order of roads from the airport to Ichibancho, seen in the map data

We checked road names and route numbers in OpenStreetMap map data. The map data is not an official road register. What we could confirm is that “the road is recorded with that name and route number”.

Listed from the airport side, the roads connect in the following order.

Order Road Direction Intersections passed
1 Prefectural Road 18, Matsuyama Kuko Line (県道18号 松山空港線) East Matsuyama Airport Entrance → Kita-Fujiwara
2 National Route 56 North Saibi Koko-mae → Nishi-Horibata
3 National Route 56 East Minami-Horibata → Shiyakusho-mae
4 National Route 11 North Shiyakusho-mae → Kencho-mae
5 National Route 11 East Kencho-mae → Saibansho-mae → Ichibancho
6 Ropeway Street (Matsuyama City Road Ichibancho-Shinonome Line) North Ichibancho → toward the Matsuyama Castle Parking Lot

In the map data, the east end of Prefectural Road 18 is Kita-Fujiwara intersection, where it meets National Route 56. In the National Route 11 section, the numbers of National Routes 33, 379, 440, and 494 are also recorded as overlapping with National Route 11.

This only means that, in the map data, the roads connect in this order. We could not find an official guide that says to take these roads from the airport to Matsuyama Castle. In the map data, National Route 56 changes to National Route 11 at Shiyakusho-mae. National Route 11 then runs north and turns east at Kencho-mae. We found no official guide that says where to turn, so we will check road signs on site.

The section of Prefectural Road 18 from the airport into the city is the same road as in the article on Matsuyama Airport to Dogo Onsen.

Ropeway Street is one-way, and Okaido is pedestrian-only

For people who come by car, the Matsuyama Castle official site page “松山城周辺観光情報” (Sightseeing information around Matsuyama Castle) says the following.

Translation: “If you are coming by car, please note that Ropeway Street is one-way.”

In the map data, Ropeway Street is recorded as one-way heading north from Ichibancho intersection (toward the ropeway station). The “parking lot map around the castle” (PDF) on the Matsuyama Castle official site also draws a north-pointing arrow on this road.

The Okaido shopping street is labeled “大街道(歩行者専用)” (Okaido, pedestrian only) on the same map. In the map data, it is also recorded as a covered, pedestrian-only road. It is not a road to enter by car.

We could not find a traffic light intersection named “Okaido” in the map data. The intersection at the entrance to the Okaido arcade is “Ichibancho” in the map data. The Okaido tram stop on the city tram line is right next to this intersection.

The same map has these other marks.

  • The way to the parking lot is drawn with a pink dotted line. You go north on the road in front of the Shinonomeguchi station building, turn east north of the station building, then go south to enter the Matsuyama Castle Parking Lot.
  • Just east of the Okaido tram stop, there is a red X mark and the words “右折禁止” (no right turn). We could not tell from the map which direction of right turn is banned.
  • There is a note, “道狭く進入困難” (road is narrow and hard to enter), with an arrow pointing to the road north of the intersection northeast of the Shinonomeguchi station building. We could not tell from the map which road it means.

The dotted lines and arrows are lines on a map, so we will check on site how they match the real roads.

The castle parking lot is first come, first served, and the capacity and address differ between sources

The parking lot close to the ropeway station is Matsuyama Castle Parking Lot (松山城駐車場, Kiyomachi Parking). The Matsuyama Castle official site says the following about reservations.

Translation: “The lot is first come, first served. We do not take reservations.”

The capacity, address, and hours are written differently in three official sources. The location, hours, and capacity are kept as written in the originals, and the fees are listed together from the table numbers.

Both the Matsuyama Castle official site and Matsuyama City say it is “about 2 minutes on foot” to the ropeway station. The Matsuyama City page was updated on April 21, 2025.

The position of point 12 on the map is a representative point of the address block (Kiyomachi 1-chome 6). It is not the position of the parking lot entrance.

The Matsuyama Castle official site says the parking lot has a quick charger for electric vehicles. People who hold a disability certificate or similar can get the parking fee refunded if they follow the procedure, for a passenger car used on the same day within the ropeway’s operating hours.

Translation: “Please pay the parking fee in advance and keep the receipt. Show the receipt and your certificate or similar at the ticket window on the 1st floor of the Matsuyama Castle ropeway station and get a confirmation stamp. If you hand the stamped receipt to the parking lot toll booth on the same day, we will refund the parking fee.”

Away from the ropeway, there is the Ninomaru Historic Garden Parking The entrance to the Kuromonguchi castle approach path (黒門口登城道) is in front of the lot, and it is about 25 minutes on foot to the Honmaru Plaza (本丸広場). The opening hours change by month, and the lot is locked outside those hours.

There is no parking lot in the Horinouchi (堀之内) area of Shiroyama Park (城山公園).

From the parking lot to the keep by ropeway or lift

The Matsuyama Castle official site explains how to ride the ropeway and lift as follows.

Translation: “If you come to Matsuyama Castle by ropeway or lift, please buy a ticket at the automatic ticket machine on the 1st floor of the Ropeway Shinonomeguchi station building. Take the escalator up to the 3rd floor and board. The ropeway runs every 10 minutes. From Chojaganaru (長者ヶ平) at the top to the keep entrance is 10 minutes on foot.”

Matsuyama City says that, if you use the ropeway round trip and enter the keep, it generally takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. The parking lot costs 420 yen for 2 hours, and 100 yen is added for every 30 minutes after that.

The Matsuyama Castle official site says you can pay with credit cards, transport IC cards, QR code payment, and so on. However, the top side takes cash only.

The Kenchoura approach path is closed to vehicles until November 27

On the top page of the Matsuyama Castle official site, a notice marked “重要” (important) announces that the Kenchoura approach path is closed to vehicles.

The Kenchoura approach path is a road that general vehicles cannot use in the first place. If you walk up during this period, the road is narrower. The notice does not say what happens after November 27.
